J.T. Miller scored on a delayed penalty at the 2:39 mark of overtime to give the visiting Vancouver Canucks a wild 5-4 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Thursday.

Miller, who also had an assist, snapped a shot from the left circle past the stick side of goalie James Reimer for his 18th goal of the season, giving the Canucks their fifth victory in eight games (5-2-1).

The game-winner came after San Jose's Alexander Barabanov forced overtime by scoring with 0.6 seconds remaining in regulation.

Quinn Hughes had a goal and an assist and Conor Garland, Brock Boeser and Juho Lammikko also scored goals for Vancouver. Elias Pettersson had two assists, and Thatcher Demko made 24 saves to improve to 5-0-0 in his career against the Sharks.

Timo Meier snapped a six-game goal drought with a pair of power-play goals and an assist for San Jose. Barabanov had a goal and two assists, Logan Couture also scored and Tomas Hertl added a pair of assists. James Reimer finished with 22 saves.

Vancouver dominated the first period, outshooting San Jose 15-4 while taking a 2-0 lead.

Boeser started the scoring at the 14:54 mark with his 15th goal of the season. He took a pass from Miller at the bottom of the right circle and roofed a shot over Reimer's glove.

Hughes made it 2-0 at 17:40. He flipped a knuckler from the left point that went through the legs of teammate Matthew Highmore and then took a high bounce over Reimer's glove and under the crossbar for his third goal of the season.

San Jose cut it to 2-1 at the 3:35 mark of the second period. Couture's spinning pass from the left circle caromed off the stick of Canucks defenseman Tyler Myers past Demko for his 15th goal of the season.

Lammikko extended Vancouver's lead to 3-1 midway through the period when Kyle Burroughs' wrist shot from the high slot deflected off him for his fifth goal of the season.

San Jose rallied to tie it 3-3 on a pair of power-play markers by Meier.

The first came at the 14:03 mark of the second period when he took Hertl's pass from behind the net and buried a wrist shot from the left circle past Demko's blocker.

The second came 45 seconds into the third period when he took Hertl's pass in the center of the right circle and fired a wrist shot inside the right post for his 24th goal of the season.

Garland then put Vancouver back ahead with 5:27 to go when he backhanded in a rebound over Reimer during a goalmouth scramble for his 12th goal of the season. But Barabanov tied it in the final second with a wrist shot from the bottom of the left circle past Demko's glove side.
