Cal Petersen earned his first shutout of the season as the host Los Angeles Kings rode a dominant first period to a 4-0 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday.
En route to his second career shutout, Petersen made 21 saves, his biggest a third-period glove stop on Pius Suter during a breakaway chance.
Phillip Danault, Drew Doughty, Adrian Kempe and Trevor Moore each scored, and Dustin Brown collected a pair of assists for the Kings, who have won three of four games.
Alex Nedeljkovic stopped 38 shots for the Red Wings, who have lost three of four games and seven of their last 10 after a five-game winning streak.
The Kings outclassed the Red Wings from the drop of the puck and were finally rewarded when Danault notched his sixth goal of the season. Danault was on the spot for the rebound to finish a flurry at the 6:27 mark. Shots on goal at that point were 12-0 for the Kings.
The wave continued and Doughty doubled the lead at 9:06 of the first period. While the Kings were controlling play, the defenseman was fed a pass at the right point and he rifled a shot through the screen for his fourth goal of the season.
By comparison, the Red Wings were still yet to register a shot on goal.
Los Angeles finished the first period with a 27-2 edge in shots.
The visitors were much better in the second period, but Kempe's short-handed goal with 3:37 remaining in the middle frame made it a 3-0 game. Kempe was sprung for a partial breakaway by Matt Roy and snapped a shot inside the far post for his team-leading 15th goal of the season.
Detroit pulled the goalie with nearly five minutes remaining in regulation, but it was for naught as Moore's empty-net goal with 2:31 on the clock rounded out the scoring.
