Sharks 6, Maple Leafs 2: Joe Pavelski scored two goals and set up another while captain Joe Thornton notched three assists as San Jose extended its home point streak to six games (5-0-1).
Brent Burns netted his career-high 18th goal for the Sharks, who wrapped up a four-game homestand with a 3-0-1 mark and moved to within two points of idle Anaheim atop the Pacific Division. Defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic scored his first goal in 37 contests, Tommy Wingels and Martin Havlat also tallied and Antti Niemi made 19 saves in the victory.
Defenseman Jake Gardiner recorded his first career two-goal performance and James Reimer finished with 42 saves for the Maple Leafs, who saw their five-game road point streak come to an end (3-0-2).
San Jose seized control in the second period, scoring twice and outshooting Toronto by a 17-6 margin. Wingels gave the Sharks a 3-1 lead by deflecting a shot from the point at 6:54 of the session and Pavelski tallied 79 seconds later from the right circle for his 400th career point.
Pavelski kept the momentum going 4:26 into the third with his career-high 34th goal, tying Toronto's Phil Kessel for third place in the league behind Washington's Alex Ovechkin (44) and Anaheim's Corey Perry (35). The United States Olympian converted defenseman Jason Demers' cross-slot feed to give San Jose a 5-1 lead.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf inadvertently delivered his hardest hit of the night to teammate LW James van Riemsdyk early in the third period. Van Riemsdyk was slow to get up and retreated to the locker room before returning to the contest minutes later. ... Thornton moved past Sergei Fedorov for 47th place on the all-time list with 1,182 career points. ... Toronto RW Colton Orr returned to the lineup after missing eight games with an undisclosed injury.
