Eagles 33, Redskins 27: Michael Vick threw a pair of touchdown passes and ran for another as visiting Philadelphia used a scintillating first half before holding off Washington's comeback in a victorious NFL coaching debut for Chip Kelly.
LeSean McCoy rushed for 184 yards and a score on 31 carries and DeSean Jackson had seven catches for 104 yards and a touchdown as the Eagles (1-0) ripped off 33 unanswered points after giving up an early defensive score to snap the seven-game win streak of the defending NFC East champions. Vick was 15-for-25 for 203 yards and ran for 54 yards on nine carries.
Robert Griffin III, taking his first snap since undergoing major knee surgery in the offseason, endured a miserable first half before rebounding to spark a belated second-half rally by Washington (0-1). He finished 30-of-49 for 329 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
The Eagles took the opening kickoff and briskly moved downfield, but Ryan Kerrigan batted down an attempt by Vick that was ruled a backward pass and DeAngelo Hall scooped up the loose ball and returned it 75 yards for a score. The Eagles quickly responded when Vick connected on scoring passes of 25 yards to Jackson and 28 to Brent Celek before running in from 3 yards out for a 26-7 halftime edge.
McCoy capped Philadelphia's scoring blitz with a dazzling 34-yard scoring run in the opening two minutes of the third quarter for a seemingly commanding 33-7 lead before Griffin and the Redskins finally came to life. Alfred Morris scored from 5 yards out with six seconds left in the third and Griffin hit Leonard Hankerson with a pair of fourth-quarter scoring passes - the second from 24 yards with 1:14 to play to cut it to 33-27.
GAME NOTEBOOK: In the first half, Philadelphia ran off 53 plays to 21 for the Redskins and had overwhelming edges in total yards (322-75) and first downs (21-3). ... McCoy was one yard shy of his career high and notched his seventh TD run of at least 30 yards, second only to Hall of Famer Steve Van Buren (nine) in franchise history. ... Hall's fumble return for a TD, the fourth of his career, stopped an opening drive that saw Philadelphia run 10 plays in under three minutes. It marked the fourth straight season that Washington has scored a defensive touchdown in its home opener. ... The first-quarter safety, a result of a botched pitch from Griffin to Morris, was the fourth of the opening weekend, the most in league history.
