Jaylen Forbes and Jordan Walker combined for 31 points and Tulane got by Arkansas-Pine Bluff 67-56 on Saturday afternoon in New Orleans.
Forbes scored a game-high 16 points and Walker added 15 as the Green Wave (4-0) survived Pine Bluff's comeback bid to reach 4-0 for a second consecutive season.
Nicholas Jones led the Golden Lions (1-6) with 15 points, and Markedric Bell and Joshuwan Johnson added 12 points each.
Down double digits early in the second half, the Golden Lions managed to trim their deficit to two points and had two opportunities to tie or take a lead.
Tulane was up 46-34 with 13:17 left in the game when Arkansas-Pine Bluff went on a 10-0 run that closed the gap to 46-44 at the 11:47 mark. The Wave responded with five quick points and were back in front by double digits, 57-46, with 5:16 remaining.
Tulane was up by a comfortable 17 points, 67-50, entering the final minute.
The Wave started the game missing their first six shots and had three turnovers in the first five minutes but trailed only 6-2 as the Lions struggled as well, making only two of their first attempts.
The Wave then began finding the range and took the lead for good at 9-8 on Nobal Days' reverse layup at the 13:04 mark of the first half.
The Wave went up by double digits a 23-13 and had the biggest lead of the first half, 36-21, with just 1:11 remaining before the Lions got it back to 36-25 at the break.
Tulane had only a 10-8 advantage in field goals in the first 20 minutes but was 12 of 16 from the free throw line while the Lions got to the stripe only nine times, making eight. The Wave finished 17 of 23 in free throws to 14 of 19 for the Lions.
