Sophomore Billy Baron recorded a career-high 24 points, including seven in the second overtime, as visiting Rhode Island outlasted Boston College 78-72 on Monday in the 50th meeting between the New England schools.
Mike Powell matched his career high with 21 points, including a twisting layup as the shot clock went off in the second overtime, for Rhode Island (3-12).
It was the third straight win for the Rams over the Eagles, but Boston College leads the all-time series 37-13.
Baron’s previous career high (19) was in his first collegiate game, playing for Virginia last season. Orion Outerbridge had 10 points and 10 rebounds for URI.
Freshman Ryan Anderson set career highs with 18 points and 16 rebounds for Boston College (5-9). Patrick Heckmann, who had 11 points, hit a short bank shot at the buzzer to tie the game for BC 65-65 in the first overtime.
Rhode Island, averaging 5.1 made 3-pointers coming in, connected for six in the opening 20 minutes to take a 31-28 halftime lead. The Rams led by as many as 10 in the half, thanks to 10 points from Powell.
The Rams are without its top two scorers Jamal Wilson and Nikola Malesevic. Wilson was dismissed Dec. 27 for breaking team rules and Malesevic is out with a broken hand.
