Marquise Carter scored a career-high 26 points and Gonzaga shot 60 percent from 3-point range on Thursday while cruising to a 86-71 victory over St. John’s in second-round NCAA tournament play at Denver.
Steven Gray scored 16 points and Elias Harris added 15 points as 11th-seeded Gonzaga (25-9) will face third seed BYU Saturday in the third round of the Southeast Region.
Dwight Hardy scored 26 points and Justin Brownlee added 14 for sixth-seeded St. Johns (21-12).
Gonzaga made 9-of-15 3-point attempts with Gray hitting four from the arc and Carter adding three. The Bulldogs had an astounding 42-17 rebounding edge and led by as many as 18 points.
St. John’s led 8-2 after two minutes before Gonzaga started rolling and outscored the Red Storm 22-6 over the next five-plus minutes.
St. John’s played without starting forward D.J. Kennedy, who suffered a major knee injury during last week’s Big East tournament.
