Joe Harris scored 19 points, and Will Sherrill collected 14 points and eight rebounds as host Virginia defeated North Carolina State 69-58 on Tuesday.
Mustapha Farrakhan chipped in 15 points for the Cavaliers (15-14, 6-9 ACC), who moved back above .500 and into sole possession of eighth in the Atlantic Coast Conference. They could be in line for a rematch against the Wolfpack in the first round of the ACC tournament.
Javier Gonzalez finished with 16 points for North Carolina State (15-14, 5-10), which has dropped three of four.
Virginia scored the game's first 16 points in less than five minutes, with Sherrill and Harris each hitting a pair of 3-pointers during the spurt. North Carolina State quickly trimmed the deficit and pulled within 18-17 on Gonzalez’s 3-pointer, but could not get on top.
Virginia began the second half with a 10-3 burst, and turned a four-point edge into a 42-31 gap. The Wolfpack trimmed it back to single digits and drew as close as 56-50 with 3:51 left, but Farrakhan hit a 3-pointer and Harris drained three free throws to keep the Cavaliers clear.
