Virginia used a 16-1 run early in the second half to break open a close game and snapped a two-game losing streak at home as the Cavaliers (9-5) beat LSU 64-50 on Sunday night in Charlottesville, Va. The loss was the fourth in five games and the second straight for LSU (8-7), which opens Southeastern Conference play this weekend against Auburn.
LSU led 31-30 with 16:56 remaining in the game when Virginia, which had dropped consecutive home games to Seattle and Iowa State, scored 16 of the next 17 points in a span of 6:18 to take control of the game. LSU would only get as close as six at 48-42 with 6:02 to play.
Freshman K.T. Harrell led the Cavaliers with a game-high 15 points while Mustapha Farrakhan added 11. Virginia, playing again without leading scorer and rebounder Mike Scott (15.9 and 10.2, respectively), out with an ankle injury, is now 8-1 when Farrakhan scores in double figures. Virginia wraps up non-conference play on Tuesday against Howard before returning to Atlantic Coast Conference play this weekend against North Carolina.
Garrett Green came off the bench to lead LSU with 12 points while Ralston Turner and Malcolm White each added 11.
