SAN ANTONIO -- In the span of 24 hours, the Portland Trail Blazers produced their worst loss of the year and their best performance of the season.
It took every bit of the latter, which included a combined 62 points from guards Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum, for the Trail Blazers to hold off the San Antonio Spurs 110-106 on Wednesday at AT&T Center.
Lillard scored 36 points, including four free throws in the final 5.2 seconds, to provide the winning margin, and McCollum added 26 points as Portland pulled a complete reversal from Tuesday night, when they lost 100-77 at New Orleans.
"Look, we laid an egg (in New Orleans) -- it was our worst loss of the year. And then, tonight, we have our best win of the year," Trail Blazers coach Terry Stotts said. "It was one of our better games as far as staying focused and withstanding some of San Antonio's runs. I've always been proud of the way our guys bounce back."
The Spurs trailed by seven points with 2:23 to play after two free throws by Portland's Jusuf Nurkic. But they roared back, cutting the deficit to 104-102 on five straight points by LaMarcus Aldridge. McCollum's two free throws with 14.9 seconds to play pushed Portland's lead to 106-102.
A 3-pointer by San Antonio's Patty Mills with eight seconds remaining brought the Spurs within 106-105, and Lillard sank two free throws for his first two points of the fourth quarter.
San Antonio had a final shot to tie, but the Blazers fouled Manu Ginobili, who missed his first free throw and made his second when it clanged off the backboard and the rim and dropped in.
Lillard then finished off the Spurs with another pair of free throws, snapping San Antonio's nine-game home winning streak.
Nurkic had 16 points and nine rebounds for the Trail Blazers (30-37) while Noah Vonieh scored 12 points and Allen Crabbe hit for 10. Portland remains two games behind Denver for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference, with 15 games to play.
Kawhi Leonard led San Antonio (52-15) with 34 points, his 94th consecutive game with double-figure scoring, the most for the Spurs since David Robinson did it in 157 straight games in the 1993-94 and 1994-95 seasons. Leonard added nine rebounds and six assists Wednesday.
Aldridge, who had missed the previous two games due to a minor heart arrhythmia, had 19 points for the Spurs. He said he felt fine and would be without limitations going forward.
"I feel good and it felt good being back out there," Aldridge said. "We didn't get the win and that's kind of hard to deal with. This is something I've dealt with since my first year in the league. I know my body well and I had an 'off' feeling. We put a protocol in place and I saw the right people and I'm good to go."
Aldridge needed a team-high 24 shots to get his 19 points, with a handful of close misses.
"I felt like my rhythm was good early and then my touch was off around the rim, and that bothered me," Aldridge said. "It was the first game back. I will be back."
Mills added 13 points, and Pau Gasol and David Lee scored 12 each for San Antonio, which fell a game behind the Golden State Warriors in the race for the best record in the NBA.
The Spurs, bolstered by nine points from Gasol off the bench, led 29-28 at the end of the first quarter. Lillard did his part, and more, to keep Portland close by hitting five of his first six shots and scoring 12 of the Trail Blazers' first 18 points.
"We just came out and attacked, and the fact that we made them work on the offensive end made them use energy on that end of the court," Lillard said. "When we got a rebound, we pushed it. Our bigs set good hard screens, we went hard after offensive rebounds and got good shots."
Leonard took charge for San Antonio in the second quarter, scoring nine straight points in a 2 1/2-minute stretch as part of his 17 first-half points. The Spurs clung to a 55-54 advantage at halftime.
Lillard played just 5 1/2 minutes in the second quarter but still led the Trail Blazers with 16 points in the half.
A three-point play by Lillard with 1:26 to play in the third quarter gave the Trail Blazers an 80-77 lead, and Portland held an 82-80 advantage heading into the final period. Lillard scored 16 of the Trail Blazers' 28 points in the period and was on the court for all but the final 53 seconds.
A 3-pointer by Mills gave the Spurs an 89-88 lead with 8:05 to play, but Portland responded with an 8-2 run, highlighted by 3-pointers from McCollum and Shabazz Napier, and took a 96-91 advantage.
"The Trail Blazers were great, Lillard and McCollum were super and they executed their offense well," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "We just didn't guard them tonight the way we needed to. We played as hard as they did the last four minutes of the game. Maybe it's a good lesson: It's a 48-minute game; can't wait until the end."
