Rockets 121, Trail Blazers 116 (OT): Rookie Troy Daniels hit the tiebreaking 3-pointer with 11 seconds left and James Harden had 37 points and nine rebounds as visiting Houston outlasted Portland to cut the Trail Blazers’ lead to 2-1 in the Western Conference series.
Dwight Howard had 24 points and 14 rebounds and Patrick Beverley contributed 16 points and nine rebounds for the Rockets, who scored the last nine points while holding the Trail Blazers scoreless over the final 3:07 of overtime. Chandler Parsons added 15 points and Jeremy Lin had 13.
Damian Lillard scored 30 points, Nicolas Batum had 26 points and nine rebounds and LaMarcus Aldridge added 23 points and 10 rebounds for Portland, which hosts Game 4 on Sunday. Mo Williams added 17 points for the Trail Blazers, who had a chance to force a second overtime but Batum missed a tying 3-pointer with five seconds to go before Harden sealed it with two free throws.
The Rockets had an 11-point lead after Lin’s basket with 8:04 remaining in regulation but the Trail Blazers chipped away and took a 107-106 lead on Lillard’s layup with 1:59 left. Four free throws by Harden gave Houston a 3-point lead before Portland’s Batum drained a tying 3-pointer with 41.9 seconds remaining.
The Trail Blazers used a 16-0 second-quarter run to overcome a 12-point deficit and later scored the final five points of the half for a 55-54 lead. Harden scored 11 points in the third quarter as Houston took an 81-78 edge into the final stanza.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Harden set a Rockets playoff record with 35 field-goal attempts and is just 27-of-82 in the series. … Aldridge averaged 44.5 points over the first two games of the series before going 8-of-22 from the field in Game 3. … Houston possessed a 56-36 edge in points in the paint.
