Trail Blazers 98, Bulls 95: Wesley Matthews scored a season-best 28 points and drained the go-ahead jumper as host Portland won its ninth straight game by defeating Chicago, which lost star guard Derrick Rose.
Rose scored 20 points before leaving the game in the third quarter after his right knee buckled and is slated to undergo an MRI exam on Saturday to determine the severity. Luol Deng had 15 points and 14 rebounds but missed a last-second tying 3-point attempt.
Damian Lillard scored 20 points, Nicolas Batum had 17 points and five steals and Robin Lopez contributed 13 points and 16 rebounds for the Trail Blazers. LaMarcus Aldridge had just 12 points on 4-of-20 shooting for Portland, which recovered from a 21-point deficit.
The Bulls trailed by seven entering the final quarter and regained the lead at 87-85 on Deng’s basket with 4:30 left. The margin reached five points on Kirk Hinrich’s 3-pointer with 3:15 remaining before Portland went on an 8-2 run and took a 96-95 lead on Matthews’ basket with 1:37 to play.
Chicago led by 10 after one quarter and by 21 midway through the second en route to a 59-44 lead at the break. Portland outscored the Bulls 34-12 in the third quarter to take a 78-71 edge into the final stanza.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Rose had to be escorted to the locker room after his injury. He missed all of last season due to major surgery on his left knee. … Aldridge and Lillard were a combined 2-of-17 in the first half. … Carlos Boozer scored 16 points for Chicago, which had a 52-39 rebounding advantage.
