Heat 105, Spurs 100: Ray Allen nailed a 3-pointer with 22.6 seconds left to give host Miami the lead and LeBron James scored 23 points as the Heat barely held off short-handed San Antonio.
Playing their fourth game in five nights, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich made the decision to rest Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker and Danny Green for the game. The four were not even in the building after taking a commercial flight back to San Antonio.
Despite being without their best players, the Spurs hung around throughout the game and used an 11-2 run through the middle of the fourth quarter to take a 92-85 lead with 4:48 left. It was still a five-point lead when Miami finally made its move, getting baskets from James and Dwyane Wade before Allen’s go-ahead 3-pointer.
James added nine rebounds and seven assists and Allen finished with 20 points off the bench for the Heat, who sealed it at the free-throw line for their fifth straight win.
Tiago Splitter collected 18 points and nine rebounds, Matt Bonner added 10 and 10 and Gary Neal scored 20 points off the bench for San Antonio, which had its five-game winning streak snapped. The Spurs were making the final stop of a six-game road trip.
GAME NOTEBOOK: NBA commissioner David Stern was not pleased with Popovich’s decision to rest the four players and issued a statement saying, “I want to apologize to all NBA fans. This was an unacceptable decision by the San Antonio Spurs and substantial sanctions will be forthcoming.” … Kawhi Leonard and Stephen Jackson were already out for San Antonio due to injury. … Wade scored 19 points and Chris Bosh collected 18 points and 12 rebounds for the Heat.
