KNICKS 113, HAWKS 112: Carmelo Anthony went off for 39 points and 10 rebounds and took over down the stretch as visiting New York drew closer to locking up the No. 7 seed in the Eastern Conference.
The Hawks failed to clinch home court advantage in the first round.
Amare Stoudemire added 22 points and 12 rebounds and Baron Davis chipped in 13 points and 10 assists for the Knicks, who are one-half game up on the eighth-place Philadelphia 76ers. Atlanta remains a game up on the Boston Celtics.
Each team made a brief run at the beginning of the fourth quarter, with a pair of 3-pointers highlighting a 9-0 run to put the Hawks on top. The Knicks responded with two 3-pointers in their own 8-0 burst to jump back on top 106-102 with 6:54 to play.
The long range barrage continued when Joe Johnson buried one from beyond the arc to put Atlanta ahead 109-108 with 3:06 on the clock.
Anthony’s three-point play gave New York the lead back but again Johnson was there to answer, burying a deep 3-pointer from the left wing.
Anthony responded immediately, knocking down a 23-foot jumper with 1:39 on the clock to put the Knicks back up 113-112.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Marvin Williams led the Hawks with 29 points and 11 rebounds while Jeff Teague finished one point shy of his career high with 23. Johnson had 22… The teams combined to shoot 64 percent (27 for 42) from 3-point range. … Atlanta committed 19 turnovers.
