Clayton Kershaw struck out a season-high-tying 10 batters, and rookie Edwin Rios hit his first two major league homers -- doing so in his hometown -- as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the host Miami Marlins 9-1 on Wednesday night.
Kershaw (12-2) struck out the first seven batters he faced, six of them swinging. The Marlins finally got their first baserunner when Harold Ramirez singled with two outs in the fifth.
In the end, Kershaw pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing just two hits -- both singles -- and no walks. He also doubled, getting one more extra-base hit than what he allowed to the Marlins.
It was Kershaw's seventh straight quality start, and he is 5-0 with a 1.40 ERA during that span.
Rios, who played for Florida International University, was appearing in his 14th major league game. The 25-year-old first baseman went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs. His first homer went 415 feet to center, and his second blast went 412 feet to right.
Elieser Hernandez (2-5) took the loss, allowing six runs in six innings. He struck out seven, walked one and allowed eight hits, including four homers.
Los Angeles started the scoring in the first inning. With two outs, Justin Turner hit a solo homer. The next batter, Cody Bellinger, took advantage of a shift that left no one at third base, and he bunted for a single in that direction. Corey Seager then made that strategy pay off, drilling a two-run homer to center to make it 3-0.
Rios doubled the lead by hitting a solo homer in the fourth and a two-run shot in the sixth, and Seager's RBI single in the seventh gave the Dodgers a 7-0 lead.
In the eighth, Rios' leadoff, 12-pitch walk -- he hit eight foul balls -- led to another Los Angeles rally. Max Muncy ultimately hit a two-run double for a 9-0 advantage.
The Marlins, who have been outscored 24-2 in the first two games of the three-game series, never got a runner past first base until Curtis Granderson's pinch-hit homer in the ninth inning off Yimi Garcia.
