Braves 8, Mets 2: Tim Hudson pitched 7 2/3 strong innings to win his fourth consecutive start before suffering a season-ending fractured ankle in visiting Atlanta's victory.

Hudson (8-7) had to be carted off the field after suffering the gruesome injury with two outs in the eighth inning when Eric Young Jr. stepped down on his right ankle on a bang-bang play at first base. It marred a superb performance in which the 38-year-old right-hander struck out a season-high nine and left with a 6-0 lead.

Dan Uggla clubbed a three-run homer, Andrelton Simmons added a two-run blast - his second homer in as many nights - and Evan Gattis had a solo shot. All three players had two hits apiece as the Braves won for the fifth time in 11 games.

Luis Avilán replaced Hudson and was immediately greeted by a two-run double from Daniel Murphy before Jordan Walden got the final out of the inning. Hudson was charged with two runs on four hits.

Mets starter Jeremy Hefner (4-8) was rocked for his second straight start, lasting 4 1/3 innings and giving up six runs - five earned - and all three homers as New York lost for the fifth time in its last nine games.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Hudson will undergo surgery in Atlanta when the swelling in the ankle subsides. He improved to 17-10 lifetime against the Mets, his most victories against any opponent. ... Mets LHP Jon Niese, on the disabled list since June 21 with a partially torn rotator cuff, could make a rehab start for the Gulf Coast League Mets as early as this weekend. ... Uggla reached 20 homers for the seventh time in his eight seasons. He swatted 19 last year.
