Braves 2, Nationals 1 (10): Embattled Atlanta outfielder B.J. Upton drove in the winning run with a single in the 10th inning as the Braves added to their National League East lead over visiting Washington.
Upton, who entered the game batting .145, went 2-for-4 including a single he served into right field against Henry Rodriguez (0-1) to plate pinch runner Jordan Schafer in the 10th.
Jordan Walden (2-1) worked a perfect 10th for the win as four Braves pitchers combined on a five-hitter.
Both starters were dominant before turning over a 1-1 game to the bullpen. Nationals left-hander Gio Gonzalez struck out seven and allowed one run on three hits in seven innings, and Braves right-hander Tim Hudson lasted 7 1/3 innings, allowing one unearned run on three hits.
Andrelton Simmons gave the Braves a 1-0 lead with an RBI groundout in the third and Ian Desmond's two-out RBI single in the fourth tied it. That's where it stayed until the 10th, when Rodriguez walked Evan Gattis and Dan Uggla ahead of Upton's game-winner.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez was ejected by home plate umpire Larry Vanover for arguing balls and strikes during Ryan Zimmerman's at-bat in the fourth inning. … The Nationals placed LF Bryce Harper on the disabled list Saturday with left knee bursitis and called up RHP Erik Davis. Harper had missed five straight games. … Washington RHP Stephen Strasburg's MRI results revealed a slight strain of his right oblique. The Nationals have not ruled out Strasburg making his next start.
