Brady Tkachuk scored two goals and the Ottawa Senators won despite allowing three third-period goals, defeating the visiting Carolina Hurricanes 4-3 on Tuesday night.

The Senators built a 4-0 lead through two periods and withstood Carolina's third-period charge, when they were outshot 16-7.

Alex Formenton and Chris Tierney also scored for the Senators, who have won three of their last four games. Tim Stutzle and Nick Holden both provided two assists.

Anton Forsberg, a former Carolina goalie, made 42 saves for Ottawa.

Andrei Svechnikov, Brendan Smith and Vincent Trocheck scored for the Hurricanes, who entered the game with at least one point in eight of their previous nine games (7-1-1).

Antti Raanta made 27 saves in Carolina's nets, but he was denied in his bid for his 100th NHL victory.

Tkachuk had gone 15 games without a goal, but upped his total to 14 this season by scoring one in each of the first two periods. This was his third multi-goal game of the season. His first goal came 71 seconds into the game and his second-period goal came on a power play.

The Hurricanes went 0-for-4 on power plays with their most chances with a man advantage in any of their past five games. But just like the previous four games, they ended up without a power-play goal, going 0-for-11 in that span.

Carolina outshot the Senators in every period, posting at least 14 deliveries on goal in each period.

The Hurricanes got on the board when Svechnikov scored 2:07 into the third, Smith made it 4-2 with 6:06 to play and Trocheck scored with 1:12 to go after Carolina pulled Raanta.

Ottawa followed Monday night's 4-1 home victory against New Jersey with another solid outing. Carolina lost in overtime at Toronto on Monday night.

The Hurricanes have been challenged with forwards Jesperi Kotkaniemi (COVID-19 protocol) and Teuvo Teravainen (lower-body injury) out of the lineup for the past two games.

These were the first two teams to play two games following the All-Star break.
