DALLAS -- It took them 16 games, but the Dallas Stars finally delivered their first complete 60-minute effort of the season Friday night against the New York Islanders at American Airlines Center.

John Klingberg recorded a goal and two assists, and Ben Bishop stopped all 14 shots he faced to earn his 20th career shutout in the Stars' 5-0 win.

"Today I really felt like I was back in my first year," Klingberg said. "Just played hockey, felt really good. The confidence is good right now."

Mattias Janmark, Esa Lindell, Gemel Smith and Jason Spezza also scored for Dallas (9-7-0, 18 points), which outshot New York 29-14.

The Islanders (8-6-2, 18 points) were shut out for the second time this season.

"Maybe some heart would be nice to see, some work ethic, maybe following a game plan and maybe some consistency as far as getting pucks in," Islanders coach Doug Weight told MSG Network.

Klingberg gave Dallas an early lead when he scored his fourth goal of the season 1:32 into the game during a 4-on-4 situation. Klingberg received a cross-ice pass from Jamie Benn and then flicked the puck into the right side of the net.

Klingberg has 11 points (nine assists) over his past eight games.

"I see a young guy maturing," Stars coach Ken Hitchcock said. "He doesn't have a lot of games in the league to be a go-to guy. But I see his game maturing in that he's really learning when to live to fight another day with the puck, and I think that's putting him in a good spot."

Smith made it 2-0 with his first goal of the season, 5:02 before the first intermission. Smith drew Jaroslav Halak, who stopped 24 of 29 shots, off his line and maneuvered around him for his fourth career goal.

"It was unreal," Smith said of skating on Dallas' top line alongside Benn and Alexander Radulov. "It was a good feeling playing with that line, playing with two magicians. It was good for me and happy it worked out."

Lindell then put the Stars ahead by three with his fourth goal of the season with 3:02 remaining in the first period. Lindell's wrist shot from the left circle beat Halak far post, giving Dallas a 3-0 lead after one period, a frame where the Stars outshot the Islanders 13-4.

Dallas added two more goals in the middle frame to lead 5-0 after 40 minutes. Janmark scored his fourth goal of the season 6:54 into the second period, an unassisted tally after intercepting a wayward pass by Josh Bailey in the slot and burying a quick wrist shot inside the near post.

"Yeah, of course you're not going to win too many games playing the way we did tonight," Bailey said. "The one positive is that we get a chance to redeem ourselves in 24 hours and try to turn this thing around rather quickly."

Spezza ended his career-long 15-game goal-less streak with his first goal of the season with 4:00 remaining in the second and Dallas on the power play. Spezza scored from the top of the left circle to put the Stars ahead 5-0.

"It's nice to score a goal and contribute offensively," Spezza said. "Obviously, it's been a long time. Hopefully it's something I can build off of."

Bishop faced just 14 shots to earn the shutout, but Hitchcock still extolled his performance in the crease against the Islanders.

"I thought Ben was really competitive and he was battling like crazy in the net, and he was very good," Hitchcock said. "I thought he was excellent."

With 7:31 remaining in the third period, the Islanders lost forward Anthony Beauvillier to an apparent right leg injury after Spezza struck him with a shot. Beauvillier had to be helped off the ice by the Islanders' medical staff.

"You hate to see it," Weight said of Beauvillier's injury. "It was the same exact spot twice. Hopefully he's OK. He was battling tonight, actually. Beau was working and moving his feet. It's unfortunate."
