NEWARK, N.J. -- Defenseman David Schlemko scored a power-play goal with 8:46 remaining in the third period to give the New Jersey Devils a come-from-behind 3-2 victory against the New York Rangers at Prudential Center on Tuesday night.

Schlemko's goal came less than two minutes after a turnover that led to a shorthanded breakaway for Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh, who missed the net on the golden opportunity.

The Devils have won five of six and moved within two points of the Rangers for second place in the Metropolitan.

Right winger Lee Stempniak and left winger Joseph Blandisi scored in support of goaltender Cory Schneider, who turned aside 31 shots.

Left winger J.T. Miller scored both Rangers goals. Goaltender Henrik Lundqvist stopped 22 shots.

Miller's 14th of the season gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead with 6:29 to play in the first period.

Right winger Jesper Fast started the play in his own zone, beating Devils defenseman Eric Gelinas to a loose puck to spring center Derick Brassard and Miller for a 2-on-1. Brassard delivered a saucer pass to Miller, who beat Schneider for the pretty goal.

Stempniak's power-play goal -- his 15th of the season -- early in the second period pulled the Devils into a 1-1 tie. Defenseman Eric Gelinas uncorked a slap shot from the blue line that Lundqvist stopped, but Stempniak was able to bang the rebound home at 1:34. The Rangers challenged the goal but video review showed there was no goaltender interference on the part of Stempniak.

Miller scored his 15th goal and seventh in seven games at 2:06 of the third period put the Rangers ahead 2-1. Defenseman Keith Yandle drew the Devils' attention at the point before sliding the puck to Miller for a one-timer that squeezed through Schneider for a go-ahead goal.

The lead would be short-lived, however, as Blandisi answered 1:07 later to make it 2-2. The rookie streaked through the neutral zone past stumbling defenseman Dan Girardi and beat Lundqvist to the stick side for his second goal in 12 games.

Schlemko completed the comeback with five seconds remaining in a power play, wristing a shot from near the left post that hit the top corner of the net over Lundqvist's catching glove.

NOTES: Rangers LW Rick Nash missed his third straight game with a bone bruise on a leg. He skated Tuesday after staying off his injured leg for 10 days and could return later this week. ... Rangers D Dan Boyle was back in the lineup, replacing D Dylan McIlrath. ... Devils LW Michael Cammalleri did not play against the Rangers and will not play in Toronto against the Maple Leafs on Thursday because of an upper-body injury. Cammalleri was placed on injured reserve Monday retroactive to Jan. 26. ... Devils D John Moore (lower body) missed his third straight game.
