Stars 6, Canucks 1: Tyler Seguin notched his third hat trick of the season as part of a five-point performance to power host Dallas to a thrashing of skidding Vancouver.
Captain Jamie Benn recorded a tally and set up two others while defenseman Alex Goligoski scored in his third consecutive game and added an assist as the Stars maintained their hold on the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference. Ryan Garbutt also tallied and Rich Peverley collected two assists as Dallas handed the Canucks their fourth straight defeat and 11th in 12 games (1-10-1).
Kari Lehtonen made 32 saves but cost himself a chance at a shutout by misplaying a puck that led to an easy tap-in for Vancouver's Zac Dalpe. Eddie Lack surrendered five goals on 17 shots before giving way to newcomer Jacob Markstrom for the Canucks, who were held to fewer than two goals for the seventh time in nine games.
Seguin was denied from in close in the opening minutes of the contest, but Benn jammed home the rebound at 2:57 to ignite a three-point first period. Seguin converted a breakaway during a man advantage 5 1/2 minutes later before connecting on a turnaround shot from the right-wing boards with 8:01 left in the period.
Dallas continued the assault when Goligoski buried a one-timer from the right faceoff circle while on the power play 2:20 into the second period before setting up Garbutt's tally just under 10 minutes later. Lehtonen's misplay behind his own net with 1:45 left in the middle session led to Dalpe's goal and spoiled his shutout bid.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Seguin scored his third goal with 7:07 to play to tie a club record shared by Bill Guerin and Mike Modano for the most hat tricks in one season. He also registered his second five-point effort of the season and notched his 100th career assist. ... Markstrom, acquired in the deal that sent G Roberto Luongo to Florida, made four saves in the third period in his Vancouver debut. ... Benn, who extended his point streak to three games, has collected two goals and seven assists in his last five contests.
