Flyers 5, Sharks 2: Matt Read ignited a surge that saw visiting Philadelphia score three times in a 2:45 span early in the third period as the Flyers ended their nine-game losing streak against San Jose.
Captain Claude Giroux recorded a goal and two assists while defenseman Mark Streit and rookie Michael Raffl also scored for Philadelphia, which also halted a 13-game winless stretch (0-8-5) versus the Sharks. Scott Hartnell notched two assists and Steve Mason made 20 saves as the Flyers went 2-1-0 on their California road trip.
Matt Nieto netted both tallies for the Sharks, who lost for the fourth time in five games. Antti Niemi allowed four goals on 23 shots before being replaced by Alex Stalock, who finished with four saves as San Jose matched its goal total from its last four games combined.
The Flyers cashed in on an early power play as Streit beat Niemi with a one-timer from the blue line at 4:23 of the first period as Wayne Simmonds set a screen in front. Nieto scored twice in a 4:59 span to put San Jose in front.
Tommy Wingels raced down the right wing and got to defenseman Matt Irwin's bank pass off the end boards from his own blue line and dished the puck to Nieto in front for a tip-in during a man advantage at 7:33. The rookie completed his first career two-goal performance by converting Brent Burns' backhand pass from the right corner.
After a scoreless second period, Read began Philadelphia's quick outburst at 1:11 of the third with a shot from the right faceoff circle that hit Irwin's outstretched stick and knuckled past Niemi. Raffl put the Flyers ahead 78 seconds later with a shot from the slot after defenseman Erik Gustafsson's shot from the left point was blocked.
Giroux completed the spurt at 3:56, beating Niemi to the glove side with a wrist shot from the top of the left circle. Voracek completed the scoring with 2:16 remaining, firing the puck past Stalock from the slot off a pass from the left side of the net by Giroux.
