Jose Abreu drove in two runs, Ryan LaMarre hit his first major league homer, and the Chicago White Sox defeated the host Detroit Tigers 6-3 on Tuesday night.
Abreu also scored a run for the White Sox, who had lost nine of 10 games this season to their division rival. Chicago leadoff hitter Tim Anderson supplied two hits and scored twice.
Winning pitcher Lucas Giolito (8-9) allowed three runs on eight hits in six innings. Giolito also struck out seven and issued only one walk.
Chicago's Jace Fry notched four strikeouts in two hitless innings of relief. Xavier Cedeno recorded the last three outs for his first save since 2015.
Victor Martinez had two hits and drove in two runs for Detroit. Blaine Hardy (4-5) gave up four runs on five hits in four innings. Tigers shortstop Jose Iglesias left the game after eight innings due to a right thumb bruise.
Both teams got their bats going early, trading three-run first innings.
The White Sox loaded the bases with one out and Daniel Palka delivered the first run with a single. Abreu scored on Kevan Smith's sacrifice fly, and another run came in when the Tigers botched a rundown play.
Giolito nearly got out of trouble in the first after allowing a single and a double to the first two hitters. He struck out the next two batters, but Martinez slapped an opposite-field double down the left field line to bring in both runners. Jim Adduci tied the score with an RBI single.
LaMarre, a Michigan native, brought his friends and family in the stands to their feet with his breakthrough homer to left in the second.
Chicago greeted Zach McAllister with three consecutive hits in the fifth while extending the lead to 6-3. Anderson and Avisail Garcia singled before Abreu drilled an opposite-field double down the right field line to knock in both runners.
The Tigers loaded the bases against Giolito with no outs in the sixth but came up empty. James McCann flied out to short right, Mike Gerber struck out and Victor Reyes popped out, preserving Chicago's three-run advantage.
Cedeno struck out Nicholas Castellanos with runners on the corners to end the game.
