Rookie outfielder Noel Cuevas had three hits, including a three-run homer to break a tie in the seventh inning, as the Colorado Rockies defeated the host Seattle Mariners 5-1 Saturday afternoon at Safeco Field.
The Rockies won their fifth in a row and for the eighth time in their past nine games.
It was the second straight night the Rockies' No. 9 hitter in the order drove in three runs, as Tony Wolters accomplished the feat with two triples Friday night in a 7-1 Colorado victory.
Rockies right-hander Scott Oberg (2-0) got the win with one perfect inning of relief. Oberg struck out two.
Colorado starter Kyle Freeland, a left-hander, pitched five innings and allowed one run on five hits. He walked four and struck out four.
Mariners lefty James Paxton (8-3) allowed four runs on seven hits. He walked one and struck out nine.
The score was tied at 1-1 until the seventh. With one out, Pat Valaika walked and Gerardo Parra grounded a single to right field. After a mound visit, Cuevas hit an 0-1 pitch over the wall in left-center field, his second of the season.
Colorado added a run in the ninth off reliever Juan Nicasio. Carlos Gonzalez led off with a double to center field, moved to third on a single by Valaika and scored on Parra's sacrifice fly.
The Rockies opened the scoring in the fourth, as Ian Desmond led off with a single and stole second an out later. Gonzalez then grounded a run-scoring single to center field.
The Mariners tied it in the fifth as Jean Segura hit a one-out homer to left field, his seventh of the season.
Mariners right fielder Mitch Haniger returned to the lineup and went 2-for-2 with two walks after missing two games with a sprained right knee. Second baseman Dee Gordon didn't start because he twisted a hip trying to score Friday night, but he pinch hit in the ninth inning.
Rockies shortstop Trevor Story, who had played all but one of his team's innings this season, was scratched from the starting lineup after being hit by a pitch in the right foot in Friday's game.
