The bigger loss for the Tigers, was Miguel Cabrera. The veteran first baseman left the game in the third inning with ruptured left biceps tendon, and he will undergo season-ending surgery. Cabrera sustained the injury when he took a big swing at a Jake Odorizzi breaking pitch.
Adrianza's seventh-inning homer, his third of the season, gave the Twins a three-run lead. Adrianza had three hits and scored twice.
Odorizzi, the Twins' starter, gave up two runs on four hits in five innings. Ryan Pressly (1-1) pitched an inning of scoreless relief to pick up the win, and Fernando Rodney tossed a perfect ninth inning for his 14th save.
Jose Iglesias had two hits, a run and an RBI for the Tigers. Starting pitcher Blaine Hardy tossed six-plus innings and gave up two runs on three hits. Louis Coleman (3-1), who walked two batters in two-thirds of an inning, was tagged with the loss.
Minnesota manufactured a run in the third. Adrianza reached on an infield single, stole second, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on Ryan LaMarre's sacrifice fly.
Odorizzi issued four walks without giving up a run in the first three innings but wasn't so fortunate in the fourth. John Hicks led off with a single and scored on Iglesias' triple down the right field line. Leonys Martin gave the Tigers a 2-1 advantage with a long sacrifice fly to center field.
Adrianza's big blast gave the Twins a 5-2 lead. Eduardo Escobar led off the seventh with a single, ending Hardy's night. Coleman came in and walked two of the four batters he faced. Warwick Saupold replaced Coleman, and Adrianza drilled a 3-1 fastball over the right field wall.
Minnesota's lead was cut to one in the bottom of the inning. With runners in scoring position, JaCoby Jones hit a slow roller that he beat out for a single as Niko Goodrum scored. Escobar made a throwing error on the play, allowing Victor Martinez to score, too.
Miguel Sano gave the Twins a 6-4 lead in the eighth with a single that knocked in Eddie Rosario.
