MIAMI -- The Miami Marlins, hoping to catch the Colorado Rockies in the National League wild-card race, had a run wiped out in the eighth and failed to get what seemed to be an imminent walk-off win with the bases loaded in the ninth.

The result was a 3-2 loss to the worst team in baseball, the Philadelphia Phillies, on Thursday night at Marlins Park.

"We're leaving a lot of chances -- not getting the (big) hit right now," Marlins manager Don Mattingly said. "Just a bad time."

The Marlins appeared to have tied the score 3-3 in the eighth on a swinging bunt by Tomas Telis. Reliever Luis Garcia's throw to first bounced into right field and allowed Derek Dietrich to score. However, Telis ran into the baseline and was called out.

"You don't see that very often, but it was the right call," Mattingly said. "You've got to give the pitcher a place to throw the ball."

Telis said that was the first time he has been the victim of that call.

"I was trying to run hard," he said. "I don't know why he called that because the ball didn't hit me."

Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton, who leads the majors in homers, went 0-for-5. Stanton, who flew out, struck out twice and popped out twice, is 1-for-15 this week.

Stanton was involved in Miami's failed ninth-inning rally against Phillies closer Hector Neris, who earned his 17th save the hard way.

Neris hit pinch-hitter Mike Aviles with his first pitch and allowed a single to Dee Gordon. Stanton then hit a deep fly out to center, but Aviles did not tag up. Christian Yelich hit a low liner to left that was grabbed on a diving play by Hyun Soo Kim for the second out.

After a walk to Marcell Ozuna loaded the bases, J.T. Realmuto was caught looking at a 2-2 fastball that was either low or right at the knees, ending the game.

With the loss, the Marlins (66-67) slipped under .500 and trail the Rockies by six games in the battle for the NL's final playoff berth.

Philadelphia (50-83), owners of the worst record in the majors, won with the help of right-hander Ben Lively (2-5), who allowed two runs in six innings and also stroked a two-run single.

Lively credited his catcher, Cameron Rupp, for helping him get out of jams in the second and third innings.

"I stuck with Rupp -- he knows these guys better than I do," said Lively, who broke a personal five-game losing streak. "I believed in him, and I believed in my pitches."

Rhys Hoskins went 1-for-3 and became the first Phillies rookie to produce a 13-game hit streak in the first month of his major league career since Hall of Famer Chuck Klein accomplished the feat in 1928.

Odrisamer Despaigne (0-2) took the loss, allowing three runs in four innings.

Miami opened the scoring, loading the bases with no outs in the second inning but managing only one run on a Miguel Rojas groundout.

Philadelphia did better with its opportunity in the fourth, taking a 3-1 lead on an RBI single by Pedro Florimon and Lively's two-run single.

"I feel if I swing hard enough and get a hold of it right, good things will happen," said Lively, who is hitting .235 with one homer and four RBIs this season.

Miami closed its deficit to 3-2 in the fifth. Gordon led off with a bunt single, and he dove into third base at the end of the play, courtesy of throwing errors by Lively and second baseman Cesar Hernandez. Gordon trotted home on an RBI double by Yelich.

But that was the last successful rally of the night for the Marlins.

"Good thing Lively drove in two runs," Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said. "We won, and we're happy about that."

NOTES: Miami is set to recall LHP Dillon Peters, who will make his major league debut on Friday against the Phillies. Peters, who turned 25 on Thursday, was 6-2 with a 1.97 ERA at Double-A Jacksonville this year. ...
