PHILADELPHIA -- Aaron Altherr insists he is not trying to make up for lost time, despite missing most of the season after injuring his wrist in spring training.
He is nonetheless doing just that for the Philadelphia Phillies.
Playing just his fifth game since returning from the disabled list and first at home, Altherr keyed a five-run eighth inning with a tiebreaking, two-run single as Philadelphia beat the San Francisco Giants 13-8 Tuesday night.
Cameron Rupp capped the inning with a three-run homer for Philadelphia, which scored its most runs of the season to win for the third time in five games.
Altherr, who went 3-for-5 with a homer and a career-high-tying five RBIs, became the first Phillie to have a homer, five RBIs and a stolen base in a game since Chase Utley in 2008.
Altherr opened the scoring with a two-run blast in the first inning off Giants All-Star left-hander Madison Bumgarner. He then bounced a 1-2 slider from reliever Sergio Romo through the middle of a drawn-in infield to snap an 8-8 tie in the eighth.
"I wouldn't say I'm trying to make up for anything," Altherr said. "I'm still going to go out there and do what I can do, and not try to do too much and be somebody I'm not. I'm going to go out there and be relaxed, and let the game come to me and whatever I can do to help the team win, I'll do."
Maikel Franco also hit a three-run homer and went 4-for-4, equaling a career high for hits. His four RBIs matched his season high.
Cesar Hernandez also had four hits for the Phillies
Hernandez, Altherr and Franco, the Nos. 1-3 hitters in the Philadelphia order, combined to go 11-for-14 with two doubles, two homers, nine RBIs, a walk and a stolen base. No other team in the major leagues has seen the top three hitters in its order combine for 11 hits and reach 12 times in a game this season.
"It was good to see all the fireworks tonight off the bats, especially against a guy like Bumgarner," Philadelphia manager Pete Mackanin said. "Tough pitcher, and we hit him pretty good."
Brandon Crawford, Brandon Belt and Angel Pagan homered for the National League West-leading Giants, who rallied from a 6-0 deficit but lost for the 12th time in 16 games since the All-Star break.
With the game tied at 8-8 and one out in the eighth, pinch hitter Odubel Herrera, batting for Hector Neris (4-3), beat out an infield single and took third on a double by Hernandez off Will Smith, who was making his debut for San Francisco, following Monday's trade with the Milwaukee Brewers.
Romo replaced Smith (1-4), and Altherr came through with his hit.
Franco walked, and Rupp hit his 11th homer of the season.
Bumgarner surrendered season highs of eight runs (four earned) and 10 hits in five innings. It marked the fourth time Bumgarner allowed eight runs and first time since yielding a career-high nine on May 17, 2013. The 10 hits he surrendered equaled the second-most Bumgarner has allowed.
"I wasn't making a whole lot of good pitches," he said. "Had a hard time putting guys away."
"Just chalk it up to an off night," San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy said. He's human. Made a lot more mistakes than were accustomed to. He was just off tonight."
Phillies starter Zach Eflin also went five innings, allowing six runs and six hits while striking out four and walking three.
Hernandez singled to open the bottom of the first inning, and Altherr lined an opposite-field homer to right.
Altherr added an RBI single in the second, and Franco followed with his three-run homer, making it 6-0. It was the 20th homer of the season for Franco, who became the first Phillies third baseman that many since Scott Rolen had 25 in 2001.
Crawford got the Giants on the board when he led off the fourth inning with his 10th homer of the year and added a two-run single to ignite a five-run fifth. Belt capped the frame with a three-run homer on a first-pitch fastball from Eflin, tying the game at 6-6.
All five runs came with two outs
The Phillies reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Franco led off with a double, advanced to third on an infield out and scored on Tommy Joseph's single, making it 7-6.
Pagan's two-run homer off reliever Luis Garcia in the sixth put the Giants ahead, but the Phillies tied the score once again in the bottom of the inning.
Pinch hitter Taylor Featherston drew a leadoff walk from Bumgarner, and Hunter Strickland came on in relief for San Francisco. Featherston stole second as Hernandez struck out, and one out later, Franco bounced a single to center, making it 8-8.
NOTES: Home plate umpire Bob Davidson asked security personnel to eject a fan for using sexually suggestive language while yelling at Davidson in the sixth inning. "You could have your wife, girlfriend, kids (in the stands)," Davidson told a pool reporter after the game. "They buy tickets. They don't have to come here and listen to that." ... The Phillies designated RHP Andrew Bailey for assignment and recalled RHP Luis Garcia from Triple-A Lehigh Valley prior to the game. ... The Giants placed OF Mac Williamson on the disabled list (retroactive to Monday) with a left shoulder strain and reinstated INF Ehire Adrianza (broken foot) from the 60-day disabled list. ... Philadelphia RHP Jeremy Hellickson, the subject of trade rumors heading into Monday's non-waiver deadline, said he spent the day binge-watching the Netflix series "Stranger Things." as opposed to agonizing over a potential deal. "I'm definitely happy it's over," he said. "I don't want to say it's tough, but it's not really something you want to go through. I'm happy it's over, and happy I'm still here."
