Giants 2, Twins 1: Pablo Sandoval homered for the second straight game and Ryan Vogelsong tossed six-plus innings as San Francisco edged visiting Minnesota.
Sandoval led off the second inning with his fourth home run in his last six games for the Giants, who have won all five interleague games this season. Vogelsong (3-2) allowed three hits while striking out seven over 6 2/3 innings and two relievers bridged the gap to Sergio Romo, who worked around Josmil Pinto’s leadoff homer in the ninth for his 16th save.
Samuel Deduno (1-3) yielded two runs on four hits over 5 2/3 innings for Minnesota, which was held to four hits and lost its second straight. The Giants moved ahead 2-0 when Angel Pagan singled to begin the sixth inning and later scored on Sandoval’s sacrifice fly.
While Sandoval powered the Giants’ offense, Vogelsong held the Twins in check and lowered his ERA to 1.35 over his last six games covering 40 innings. Sandoval has four homers in his last 19 at-bats after homering just two times in his first 42 games.
Minnesota was 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and has gone 0-for-14 over the first two games of the series. First baseman Joe Mauer went 1-for-4 and is batting .439 (29-for-66) during his 17-game hitting streak against National League opponents.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Giants RF Hunter Pence went 0-for-2 with two walks, snapping his 10-game hitting streak. … Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire said he expects OFs Josh Willingham and Oswaldo Arcia to be activated from the disabled list on Monday. … Giants RHP Matt Cain (hamstring) cut his bullpen session short after just 15 pitches prior to Saturday's game and appears unlikely to make his scheduled start on Monday.
