OTTAWA -- Center Mika Zibanejad scored the decisive goal in the shootout as the Ottawa Senators earned their first home win of the season, defeating the Calgary Flames 5-4 Wednesday night at Canadian Tire Center.
The Senators' losing streak ended at four games, while the Flames' losing streak extended to three games.
Calgary lost starting goalie Jonas Hiller when Senators winger Bobby Ryan crashed into him during a rush at 12:20 of the third.
Goalie Joni Ortio replaced Hiller, and just 12 seconds after Ryan sat in the box to serve a goalie-interference penalty, Flames center Sam Bennett fired a wrist shot home for his first NHL goal to set the stage for overtime.
Senators goalie Craig Anderson made a remarkable glove save off Flames winger Johnny Gaudreau with 1:20 left in the extra five minutes.
Scoring for the Senators were centers Zack Smith, Kyle Turris and Jean-Gabriel Pageau and winger Bobby Ryan. Other Calgary goals were scored by defensemen Dougie Hamilton and Kris Russell and winger Joe Colborne.
Anderson made 34 stops. Hiller stopped 14 shots before he left the game, and Ortio wound up making five saves.
The Senators trailed 1-0 late in the second period when the teams suddenly started lighting up the board.
Smith fired a shot from the high slot just inside the post to even the count at the 17:58 mark. A couple of minutes later, a pane of glass broke upon the collision of two players, forcing the remaining 55 seconds to be tacked on to the third. When play resumed, Ryan jammed in a chip shot from the side of the crease, 14 seconds before the teams switched ends, to put Ottawa in front.
The lead did not last long, however. Colborne tied the game at 4:23 of the third, tapping in a loose puck off a broken play, and Russell put the Flames ahead 57 seconds later when his shot from the left wing circle slid under Senators winger Matt Puempel and between the legs of Anderson.
However, Ottawa struck quickly near the midway mark of the third to move back in front.
First, Turris fired a backhand from a scramble high over Hiller at the 9:50 mark. Just 18 seconds later, Pageau slid a puck along the ice through a traffic jam in front of the Calgary net that somehow made it through and behind Hiller.
Hamilton scored the game's first goal as the trailer on a play at 4:15 of the second period, taking a pass from winger Jiri Hudler and ripping a shot that beat Anderson high on the glove side. The goal was Hamilton's second of the season.
A listless first period saw the Flames outshoot the Senators 10-4, with each team getting one power-play opportunity.
The Senators' next game is Friday in Detroit, while the Flames play at Montreal on Friday.
