Hurricanes 3, Maple Leafs 1: Defenseman Joe Corvo, Jussi Jokinen and Jordan Staal scored second-period goals as host Carolina remained hot by cooling off Toronto.
Dan Ellis made 22 saves for the Southeast Division-leading Hurricanes, who are 5-0-1 in their last six games and have won 16 of the last 22 meetings with the Maple Leafs. Jeff Skinner recorded two assists while Eric Staal had one to extend his point streak to 11 games (17 points).
Nazem Kadri scored for the Maple Leafs, who had their four-game winning streak snapped in losing to Carolina for the second time this season. Ben Scrivens, replacing the injured James Reimer, made 30 saves for Toronto.
The Hurricanes took a 1-0 lead at 6:06 of the second period, when Corvo solved Scrivens with a high wrist shot. After the Maple Leafs tied it 1:45 later, when Kadri deflected captain Dion Phaneuf's point shot past Ellis on the power play, Jokinen beat Scrivens to a loose puck and scored with a man advantage at 12:58 of the second.
Jordan Staal banged home the rebound of Skinner's shot at 15:09. Ellis kept it a two-goal game when he denied Phil Kessel moments later and needed to make only five saves in the third period to improve to 3-1-0 with a .943 save percentage this season.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Hurricanes were without Ds Joni Pitkanen and Tim Gleason, both of whom suffered lower-body injuries in Tuesday's 4-2 victory at New Jersey. ... Carolina D Michal Jordan (pronounced Mee-KYLE, Your-DON) made his NHL debut and wore sweater No. 47 - not 23. ... Leafs D Mike Komisarek was a healthy scratch for the sixth straight game and ninth time in 13 contests this season.
