Hurricanes 4, Maple Leafs 1: Jordan Staal and Patrick Dwyer had a goal and an assist apiece and Cam Ward made 41 saves in his first quality start of the season as Carolina improved to 7-1-1 in its last nine games in Toronto.
Jeff Skinner had three assists and captain Eric Staal and defenseman Justin Faulk scored on the Hurricanes' power play, which finished 2-for-4.
Matt Frattin opened the scoring with his fifth goal in six games, but Toronto couldn’t solve Ward again despite five power plays and 19 third-period shots. James Reimer stopped 35 shots in defeat.
Ward allowed at least three goals in each of his previous four starts this season, but looked solid after allowing Frattin’s early goal. Jordan Staal tied the game early in the second period before his brother gave Carolina the lead nine minutes later with his team-leading seventh goal of the season.
Carolina dominated the second period - outshooting the Maple Leafs 20-5 - while Faulk and Dwyer added insurance goals in the third. Faulk converted a cross-slot pass from Skinner with the man advantage and Dwyer fired a wrist shot from the slot past Reimer’s glove.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Eric Staal is enjoying a six-game point streak. He has scored all 10 of his points this season during the streak. … Kevin Westgarth and Frazer McLaren fought 2:55 into the game. Toronto is second in the league with 10 fighting majors. … Nazem Kadri assisted on Frattin’s goal and the two have combined for at least one goal in four of the six games they’ve played together.
