Kelan Martin recorded 21 points and six rebounds to lead Butler to an 89-52 victory over visiting Northern Colorado in the season opener for both teams Saturday night at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind.

Tyler Lewis had 16 points, five assists and three steals for Butler, which shot 53.3 percent from the field. Kamar Baldwin came off the bench to score 11 points.

Jordan Davis scored a game-high 25 points while shooting 7 for 11 from the field for Northern Colorado. No one else scored in double figures for the Bears, who shot 34.8 percent.

The teams traded leads a number of times in the opening minutes. Northern Colorado went up 10-8 on a 3-pointer by Chaz Glotta. Butler took a 12-10 lead on a layup by Lewis. The Bulldogs were clinging to a one-point lead when Lewis scored again to start a 6-1 run that gave them a 22-16 lead midway through the opening period.

Northern Colorado battled back to get back within one. Butler responded with a 14-2 run to take a 40-27 lead on two free throws by Martin with 3:01 to play in the first half. The Bulldogs led 41-31 at the break.

Martin scored 17 points in the first half for Butler, which shot 50 percent in the opening half despite making just 2 of 11 from 3-point range. Davis had 20 first-half points for the Bears, who shot 42.9 percent and made 4 of 13 from beyond the arc.

Northern Colorado trailed by 12 after Davis converted a three-point play with 15:30 remaining. Butler responded with a 15-2 run to take a 65-40 lead on a layup by Nate Fowler.

The Bulldogs continued to build on their lead over the final 10 minutes. They went up 78-42 on a 3-pointer by Baldwin and took an 86-42 lead on a free throw by Joey Brunk.
