Isaiah Manderson added 10 points and five boards off the bench for Texas Tech (10-3), while Zach Smith added nine points, three assists and three blocks. The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Red Raiders heading into three straight games against nationally ranked Big 12 opponents.
Jordan Williams scored 20 points to lead North Texas (6-6), with no other player scoring more than five. Jeremy Combs and Colin Voss each grabbed seven boards but the Mean Green were outrebounded 36-30.
There wasn't a lot of scoring early on as the teams were tied at 4 with six minutes gone in the first half. It was tight throughout, with neither team able to get a substantial lead, and the Red Raiders took a 26-22 advantage into the break.
Texas Tech went on a 9-2 run early in the second half to forge a 10-point lead, which reached 12 on Evans' 3-pointer with 13:04 to play. The lead stayed in double digits for much of the rest of the way as the Raiders hit six free throws in the final minutes to stave off the Mean Green.
