Washington State 62, Cal. State-Bakersfield 56: DaVonte Lacy scored a career-high 28 points and the host Cougars shrugged off a woeful shooting performance to hold off the Roadrunners in the season opener for both teams.
Lacy, who was 14-for-17 from the line, was the only Cougar to finish in double figures. D.J. Shelton had seven points and 10 rebounds for Washington State, which scored the game's final four points.
Abdul Ahmed led Cal. State-Bakersfield with 12 points, including a 3-pointer which cut what once was a 17-point deficit to 58-56 with 1:35 to play. Brandon Barnes added 10 points and seven rebounds for the Roadrunners, which hurt their chances at the upset by making just 11-of-28 free throws.
The Cougars shot 9-of-31 from the floor in the first half but still took a 28-25 lead into the break. Washington State opened things up quickly in the second half, holding Bakersfield without a field goal for nearly the first seven minutes of the period to build a 45-27 advantage.
Bakersfield responded with a 10-0 run to cut the deficit to 45-37. The Roadrunners, who have never beaten a Pac-12 team, missed their final three shots from the field.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Zach Lamb's free throw with 4:34 left in the first half gave Bakersfield its last lead of the game 21-20. ... Lacy had three 20-point games last season. ... Washington State was 2-for-16 from 3-point range in the first half and finished 4-for-23 while shooting 31.3 percent overall.
