Butler 82, No. 9 North Carolina 72: Freshman Kellen Dunham and Arkansas transfer Rotnei Clarke scored 17 points each as the Bulldogs held on for the upset in the Maui Invitational semifinal.
Andrew Smith contributed 13 points and Khyle Marshall had 10 points and a team-high 11 rebounds for Butler (3-1), which will meet Illinois in Wednesday's championship game. North Carolina plays Chaminade in the consolation final.
P.J. Hairston led the Tar Heels (4-1) with 15 points, Reggie Bullock and Marcus Paige had 13 apiece and James Michael McAdoo finished with 10, but committed seven of North Carolina’s 15 turnovers.
Butler, which won its tournament opener Monday on a last-second 3-pointer by Clarke, went up 17-7 on a 3-pointer by Clarke with 13:01 remaining in the first half. The Bulldogs sank four of their first five 3-point attempts in the second half to extend the lead to 29 with 11:56 left in game.
North Carolina cut the deficit to seven with 1:04 remaining, but Chase Stigall made three of four free throws down the stretch to preserve the upset.
GAME NOTEBOOK: North Carolina scored 18 points in the first half, its fewest in an opening period since 1998 against Purdue. … The Tar Heels, who averaged 18.75 offensive rebounds through their first four games, had just nine against Butler. … North Carolina came into the game with a 14-2 record in this tournament, second-best to Duke (15-0).
