D’Angelo Harrison hit his third 3-pointer with 38 seconds left to help St. John’s avoid an upset at home with a 66-61 victory over Texas-Pan American on Wednesday.
A once promising St. John’s season has already endured several setbacks, including its starting point guard leaving the team last week. Still, there would have been no bigger loss than a shocker to Texas-Pan American, which hasn’t beaten a BCS conference opponent since joining the Great West in 2008.
St. John’s (6-5) trailed by eight at the half and for almost the entirety after the break until Harrison drilled an open jumper to give it a 62-61 lead. Texas-Pan American (4-10) turned it over on the ensuing possession and the Johnnies sealed it with free throws.
Harrison finished with 21 points and God’sgift Achiuwa scored a game-high 22 for St. John’s, which has only seven scholarship players on its roster.
Freshman Amir Garrett made his season debut after being declared academically eligible and scored three points in limited action. Still, it was another body that the Red Storm will desperately need when they begin Big East play Tuesday against Providence.
