Thunder 107, Kings 92: Kevin Durant scored 23 points and sat out the entire fourth quarter to end his streak of consecutive 25-point outings at 41 as visiting Oklahoma City routed Sacramento.
Caron Butler was 6-of-6 from 3-point range and also scored 23 points as the Thunder moved 1 1/2 games ahead of the Los Angeles Clippers in the battle for second place in the Western Conference. Serge Ibaka added 19 points and Oklahoma City rested Russell Westbrook on the first end of a back-to-back that ends with Wednesday’s showdown against the Clippers.
DeMarcus Cousins had 24 points and 14 rebounds and Travis Outlaw scored a season-best 24 points as the Kings lost to the Thunder for the 10th consecutive time. Small forward Rudy Gay was held out with a back injury and point guard Isaiah Thomas (quadriceps) sat out for the eighth straight contest.
Oklahoma City pulled away by scoring the first 16 points of the fourth quarter as Jeremy Lamb made two 3-pointers and Butler drained one to increase the advantage to 101-77. The large burst kept Durant from re-entering the contest as his streak of consecutive 25-point outings came to an end one game after passing Michael Jordan for the third-longest streak on Sunday.
Butler’s 3-pointer capped a 13-4 surge that gave the Thunder a 50-41 lead with 3:37 remaining in the half and Oklahoma City carried a 61-49 lead into the break. Sacramento was within three points after Outlaw’s basket with 3:40 to play in the third quarter before the Thunder stretched the lead out to 85-77 entering the final stanza.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Thunder G Thabo Sefolosha had two points in 15 minutes after missing Oklahoma City’s previous 17 games with a calf injury. … PF Reggie Evans (back) also missed the game for the shorthanded Kings. … Hall of Famers Wilt Chamberlain (80) and Oscar Robertson (46) possess the only two longer streaks of 25 or more points than Durant’s run.
