Mariners 2, Tigers 0: Hisashi Iwakuma pitched six strong innings and pinch hitter Kyle Seager broke up a scoreless tie with an RBI double in the seventh to help host Seattle clinch the three-game series.

Mariners leadoff hitter Endy Chavez had two hits, including an RBI single that drove in Seager in the seventh, and his diving catch in center helped finish off the Tigers in the ninth. Iwakuma allowed three hits and Carter Capps (1-1) pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth before Tom Wilhelmsen retired the side in the ninth for his sixth save.

Seattle put runners on base in five of the first six innings against Detroit starter Justin Verlander (2-2) but couldn’t break through until the seventh, when Robert Andino singled to left with two outs and Seager pinch hit for shortstop Brendan Ryan. Seager drove Verlander’s 114th pitch into left for a run-scoring double and a 1-0 lead.

Iwakuma benefited from two groundball double plays through the first four innings and escaped a leadoff walk in the fifth before leaving after 70 pitches. The Tigers loaded the bases off Capps with one out in the seventh but Jhonny Peralta struck out swinging and Alex Avila fouled out to left field.

Detroit, which came into Wednesday’s game hitting a major-league leading .307, went 12-for-80 at the plate in the final two games of the series.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The day after both teams combined for 40 strikeouts, second most in a major-league game since 1920, the Mariners and Tigers combined for 17, including 12 by Seattle against Verlander. …. Mariners 1B Kendrys Morales entered the game 7-for-18 with nine RBIs in his career against Verlander. He doubled in his first at-bat before finishing 1-for-3 off the right-hander. … Detroit 1B Prince Fielder, who struck out nine times in the first two games of this series to become the fourth player since 1990 to strike out at least four times in consecutive games, finished 2-for-4 without striking out on Thursday.
