Skip Schumaker belted a solo home run with one out in the ninth inning to lift the St. Louis Cardinals to a 5-4 victory over the visiting Kansas City Royals on Sunday.
Schumaker's blast off Tim Collins (3-4) made a winner of closer Fernando Salas (4-1), who had blown the save in the top of the inning by coughing up a solo homer to Alcides Escobar.
Albert Pujols went 3-for-3 with a home run before leaving with a wrist injury, as St. Louis won the finale of the three-game series against its intrastate rivals.
Rookie Andrew Brown had two hits and two RBIs for the Cardinals. Schumaker drove in a go-ahead run with a sixth-inning single.
Pujols, who hit his 17th homer in the fifth to give St. Louis a 3-2 lead, suffered a sprained left wrist while tagging Wilson Betemit at first base in the sixth inning. He will undergo further evaluations after the game and on Monday.
Kansas City's Danny Duffy left the game with two outs in the fourth due to a cramp in his left calf. The rookie lefty had struck out nine in 3 2/3 innings.
