Flames 3, Coyotes 2: Matt Stajan scored the decisive goal late in the second period and Karri Ramo made 30 saves as Calgary began its five-game homestand with its first win in five contests (1-3-1).
Rookie Sean Monahan and Lance Bouma also tallied for the Flames, who produced their highest offensive output in nine games. Ramo also notched an assist as Calgary scored more than two goals for the first time since a 4-3 triumph at Colorado on Jan. 6.
Antoine Vermette scored his second short-handed goal in two games and captain Shane Doan also tallied for the Coyotes, who have lost eight of 11. Mike Smith turned aside 23 shots in defeat.
Calgary opened the scoring midway through the first period as TJ Galiardi made a backhand pass from below the right faceoff circle to Monahan, who buried it from the doorstep for his team-leading 14th goal. Bouma made it 2-0 at 8:48 of the second by converting a short breakaway from the left circle, but Vermette beat Ramo with a one-timer from above the slot less than four minutes later to halve the deficit.
Stajan drilled a shot from the top of the slot past Smith with 3:59 remaining in the session to restore the Flames' two-goal advantage. Doan beat Ramo with a wrist shot from the left circle at 6:50 of the third, but the Coyotes were unable to get the equalizer.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Coyotes were the lone team without a short-handed goal before Vermette registered the 19th of his career in Monday's loss to Toronto. ... Calgary captain Mark Giordano extended his point streak to five games with an assist on Stajan's goal while Phoenix D Keith Yandle set up Doan's tally to stretch his assist streak to five contests. ... Flames C Paul Byron missed the game with a lower-body injury suffered Monday against San Jose.
