Erick Aybar homered twice and tied a franchise record with five runs as part of a 4-for-4 day, pacing a 15-hit attack as the Los Angeles Angels topped the host Baltimore Orioles, 11-2, Sunday.
Los Angeles kept its playoff hopes alive, moving within four games of AL West-leading Texas, which played at Seattle later Sunday.
If not for Justin Verlander, Angels starter Jered Weaver (18-7) would be a strong contender for the Cy Young Award. He allowed two runs and six hits over six innings and lowered his ERA to 2.41.
Aybar homered in back-to-back innings, hitting a solo shot in the third and a two-run blast in the fourth off Orioles starter Alfredo Simon (4-9). His five runs tied Tim Salmon’s mark set in 1998
against Cleveland.
Howie Kendrick added three hits and three RBIs and Vernon Wells clubbed a two-run homer for the Angels.
Vladimir Guerrero tripled and hit his 13th homer, and drove in both runs for Baltimore, whose four-game winning streak ended.
