Jim Larranaga won his 220th game at Miami, tying the school coaching record set by Bruce Hale (1954-67).

Pitt (11-18, 6-12) was led by John Hugley, who scored a game-high 20 points. The 6-foot-9, 240-pounder did damage in the paint, making 7 of 9 shots against the smaller Hurricanes and grabbing a game-best seven rebounds.

With 11:12 left in the first half, Panthers standout Mouhamadou Gueye left due to an injured right wrist sustained when he crashed to the deck. He had eight points in eight minutes, including two 3-pointers and a spectacular rebound/dunk.

Gueye, who had scored 27 points in his previous game, returned in the second half and finished with 11 points.

With 12:54 left in the second half, Miami's Anthony Walker took a left elbow from Hugley. The blow drew blood on Walker's mouth, but no foul was called. Walker received medical attention but returned and finished with seven points, six rebounds and two steals as Miami's sixth man.

In the first half, Miami made six of its first eight shots -- including two 3-pointers - and grabbed a 14-2 lead.

Pitt answered with a 10-0 run, but Miami came right back and led 47-27 at halftime, including a shot by Moore that fell at the buzzer.

Pitt finally scored off a turnover on Miami's next possession, but the Panthers never seriously challenged the Hurricanes in the final 20 minutes.
