Stanford 89, UNLV 60: Chasson Randle scored 18 points – hitting six 3-pointers – and the Cardinal raced to a 12-0 lead en route to an easy victory in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic semifinals in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Stanford (3-0) shot 57.1 percent in the first half in building a 52-29 intermission advantage over the Running Rebels (2-1). Randle made five 3-pointers in the first half, and Anthony Brown finished with 18 points, nine rebounds and five assists as Stanford shot 14-for-20 from beyond the arc in advancing to Saturday’s tournament final against Duke.
UNLV, which squeaked by Morehead State and Sam Houston State in its first two games, shot 37.9 percent from the field. Christian Wood tied a career high with 12 points, and added 11 rebounds and three blocked shots to lead the Running Rebels, who face Temple in Saturday’s consolation contest.
UNLV missed its first seven shots from the field and Stanford took advantage with Randle hitting two 3-pointers to help stake the Cardinal to a 12-0 lead. Goodluck Okonoboh’s layup with 16:21 left in the half snapped UNLV’s scoreless stretch, but after Dwayne Morgan brought the Running Rebels within 16-6, Stanford scored 14 of the next 16 points to go ahead 30-8 on Robert Cartwright’s 3-pointer.
The Running Rebels scored the first four points of the second half to briefly pull within 19 points, but Randle’s sixth 3-pointer established a 69-42 advantage with 12:01 to play. Allen added 15 points for the Cardinal and Stefan Nastic scored 10 points as four Stanford players reached double figures.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Stanford shot 5-for-21 from 3-point range in its first two games; the Cardinal hit 9-of-13 3-point attempts in the opening half. … Okonoboh, who blocked 13 shots in his first two games, finished with only one. … Randle hit a career-high seven 3-pointers against UCLA on Feb. 22.
