Marshon Brooks had another big game and Providence held on for yet another home win, posting an 84-76 victory over Sacred Heart in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday. Brooks scored 25 points and had 12 rebounds. The senior also added five assists and four steals as the Friars improved to 10-0 at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center this season.
Despite Brooks scoring 19 of his points in the first half, Providence (11-2) was only able to manage a 44-41 lead at the break. The Friars pushed the lead to 12 about midway through the second half but had to fend off a rally by the Pioneers.
Shane Gibson scored a career high 26 points for Sacred Heart (4-8), which had a three-game winning streak snapped.
The Pioneers were looking to give coach Dave Bike his 500th career victory. Bike ranks No. 20 among active coaches in wins and will look to achieve the milestone on Jan. 2 when Sacred Heart hosts Holy Cross.
