DETROIT -- It might be only 10 games into the season, but the Detroit Pistons hope they are starting to gain some believers both around the NBA and within their fan base.
For the first time since the 2008-09 season, the Pistons are off to a 7-3 start following a 108-99 victory over the Sacramento Kings on Saturday.
The Pistons have played in front of paltry crowds so far in their new home, Little Caesars Arena, but hope that their recent hot streak will bring more fans to the turnstiles.
Detroit has now won five of its last six games and improved to 2-0 on the start of a five-game homestand.
"You better get with us before it's too late," Pistons forward Tobias Harris said on Fox Sports Detroit after the game. "You better come to the arena and hop on the bandwagon before it's too late. But no, it wasn't our best game. But we came out and were able to grind it out and get some stops at the (defensive) end. Just built off our offense and as a team continued to build consistency. That's the biggest thing."
Detroit had a productive night offensively, shooting 54.2 percent from 3-point range (13 of 24), 50.6 percent from the field overall (40 of 79) and seeing six players score in double-figures.
Avery Bradley led the way with 24 points, Harris scored 20 points, Andre Drummond had 16 points and 19 rebounds, Reggie Jackson had 13 points, and Ish Smith and Anthony Tolliver each added 10 points for the Pistons.
Detroit held a 52-49 lead at halftime, but Pistons head coach Stan Van Gundy still wasn't pleased with his team's first-half performance.
"I really thought we were a lot better in the third quarter," Van Gundy said. "It was a game we had to grind out. In the first half, we didn't play with a high-energy level. Our guys wanted to win the third and they fought really, really hard."
The Pistons did win the third quarter, especially the latter stages of it.
Detroit started to separate itself late in the third quarter, starting with back-to-back 3-pointers by Jackson and Harris that gave the Pistons a 77-69 lead.
The Pistons then built an 85-72 lead with 33 seconds remaining in the third quarter on a 3-pointer by Tolliver, the last points in a 14-2 Detroit run over a span of 3:11.
The Kings closed within six at 87-81 with 9:47 remaining in the game following a basket by Vince Carter, but the Pistons regained control with a 9-4 run to take a 96-85 lead with 6:12 remaining.
Detroit ultimately built its lead to 14 at 103-89 with 2:39 remaining.
"I don't think our defense was very good tonight, but we grinded out and did what we had to do to get the win," Van Gundy said. "That's what really counts."
Drummond also continues to pile up gaudy rebounding statistics early in the season. His 19 rebounds were a season high and he now has double-digit rebounds in all 10 games this season.
"Playing these back-to-back games, everybody is still a little banged up from the night before," Drummond said. "But it's a game we needed and a game we wanted. We went out there in the second half and played the way we are supposed to."
The Kings (1-8) lost their seventh straight game despite getting five players in double-figures themselves.
Zach Randolph scored 19 points, Bogdan Bogdanovic and De'Aaron Fox each added 14 points, Buddy Hield scored 13 points and Garrett Temple added 10 points for Sacramento, which went 0-3 on an East Coast road trip that also included losses at Indiana (101-83) and Boston (113-86).
It is also the first time Sacramento has started a season 1-8 since the 1990-91 season.
"It was a small-ball game," Sacramento head coach Dave Joerger said. "They hurt us playing small-ball. We countered a little bit playing Zach at some (center). Tobias Harris was really good and Avery Bradley. Their starters are really in a rhythm right now and they are playing well."
The Kings had a good offensive night themselves, shooting 47.6 percent from the free-throw line (10 of 21) and 52.6 percent from the field overall (40-76).
NOTES: Kings PG George Hill missed the game for personal reasons. ... Detroit PF Jon Leuer missed his second consecutive game with a left ankle sprain. ... Sacramento swept last season's two-game series. ... C Willie Cauley-Stein is the only Kings player to start every game this season. ... Detroit coach Stan Van Gundy told PG Reggie Jackson, whose name popped up in trade rumors involving Phoenix's Eric Bledsoe, he is not going to be dealt. "I just wanted to set his mind at ease," Van Gundy said. "We like what he's doing." ... The teams meet again in Sacramento on March 19. ... The Kings return home to play Oklahoma City on Tuesday, while the Pistons continue their five-game homestand against Indiana on Wednesday.
