SALT LAKE CITY -- DeMar DeRozan scored a season-high 37 points as the Toronto Raptors beat the Utah Jazz 109-100 on Friday night.
The win was a nice recovery for the Raptors, who trailed by as many as 36 points in Wednesday's blowout loss in Denver.
DeRozan also put up his second 30-point game of the season, going 10 of 20 from the field and making each of his 14 foul shots. He scored 17 of his points came in the third, including a ridiculous 3-pointer while falling down with a hand in his face.
Toronto coach Dwayne Casey gave high praise for DeRozan after the game, noting that free throws and 3-pointers are shots he and the rest of the Raptors' coaching staff want DeRozan to take consistently while mixing in an effective mid-range game.
"That was part of our emphasis to him that he's taking the efficient shot," Casey said.
DeRozan, despite his coach's insistence, says he doesn't make a conscious effort to shoot more 3-pointers.
"I don't think about it," said DeRozan, who is 5 of 16 from behind the arc this season. "Me, I've never really made it a big deal to shoot 3s."
DeRozan's 3-of-7 showing from the 3-point line may not have been a big deal to him, but for the rest of the team it was a much-needed spark of offense at the end of a grueling six-game road trip.
Collectively, the Raptors shot 53.5 percent from the field.
Guard Kyle Lowry and forward Norman Powell each added 15 points for Toronto. Lowry also notched 10 assists to get his second double-double of the year.
Utah, a team known for its defensive prowess, not its ability to score the ball, scored 100 or more points for the third straight game. It was their usual calling card of stifling defense that cost the Jazz the game.
Going into the game, the Jazz held opponents to 94.4 points per game through their first eight games of the season. Giving up 109 to Toronto was a disappointment for coach Quin Snyder.
"It wasn't the best defensive effort," Snyder said. "Toronto did a good job attacking us. We weren't solid enough. A lot of individual breakdowns where guys were getting beat and put us in some compromising positions and they were able to score."
The Jazz's defensive anchor, center Rudy Gobert, echoed Snyder's sentiments.
"I think we just need to be more disciplined," Gobert said. "We didn't help on defense. We should've done a way better job defensively."
Despite its defensive issues, Utah had some bright moments on offense.
Rookie guard Donavan Mitchell scored 25 points, 12 of which came in the third quarter. He and DeRozan matched each other shot for shot down the stretch of the third quarter, but DeRozan won the individual duel by scoring 10 points in the frame's waning moments.
Mitchell became the fifth player in Jazz history to score 20 or more points in the first six games of his career. Each of those scoring bursts has occurred in the last week with 22 in a win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday and 28 in Wednesday's overtime win over the Portland Trail Blazers.
"(I look to score) just when I'm open," Mitchell said. "I don't really think right now, 'I have to score or right now I have to pass.' I just take the shots when I feel open."
Mitchell made plenty of his own shots, with a handful of flashy layups in transition and while taking his defender off the dribble.
"He's gonna be a good player in this league," Raptors guard Delon Wright said of Mitchell.
Utah shot only 43.8 percent from the field, despite 15 points from Gobert and 17 from guard Rodney Hood. Gobert only had seven rebounds in the game, down from his 12.8 per game average from last year, and his 10.9 average this year.
NOTES: Utah became the last Western Conference team to lose a home game. The Jazz are 5-1 at home. ... The Raptors beat the Jazz for the fourth straight meeting. ... Toronto G C.J. Miles missed the game because of the flu. ... Toronto G DeMar DeRozan made 14 free throws for the second time. He also did it Oct. 21 against the Philadelphia 76ers.
