Josh Donaldson hit a solo home run with one out in the top of the 10th inning to lead the Atlanta Braves over the Washington Nationals 5-4 on Wednesday.

Donaldson's 25th homer of the season came on a 1-2 pitch from closer Sean Doolittle (6-3).

Sean Newcomb (5-1) got the win after blowing a save opportunity in the ninth. Josh Tomlin worked the bottom of the 10th for his second save.

The Nationals tied the game in the ninth, putting two runners on against Luke Jackson before Newcomb entered the game. After a walk, Kurt Suzuki drove in a run with a bases-loaded single and a run scored when Gerardo Parra hit into a double play.

Washington starter Anibal Sanchez gave up four runs on 10 hits in five-plus innings.

The Braves took a 1-0 lead in the second as Adam Duvall hit a solo homer off Sanchez. It was his third homer in the past two days over four at-bats, and his fourth home run since he was called up from Triple-A on Saturday.

Juan Soto of the Nationals hit a long homer to center -- his 20th of the year -- in the bottom of the second off Mike Soroka to tie the game at 1-1. It was Soto's eighth homer in 25 career games against the Braves.

Soto became the third player in major league history with more than one 20-homer season before his 21st birthday. He hit 22 homers last year as a rookie.

Soroka pitched seven innings, giving up one run and three hits. He struck out three and walked three.

Atlanta chipped away with runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings before Washington's Matt Adams hit a pinch-hit homer in the eighth to cut the lead to 4-2.

The Nationals had a golden chance in the sixth off Soroka.

Howie Kendrick led off with a pinch-hit single but was thrown out at home as he tried to score on a double by Trea Turner. Soroka then retired the next two batters to end the threat.
