DENVER -- Ben Paulsen had two walk-offs Monday night.

The first cost the Colorado Rockies a run and came after a mental lapse. The second was a ninth-inning single that gave the Rockies an 8-7 win over the Texas Rangers.

In the fifth, Paulsen, thinking there were two outs, fielded a grounder at his first base position, ran to the bag and took several steps toward the Rockies' dugout. However, there was one out, and a run scored on the play.

"That's the first time I think I've seen two walk-offs in one night," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "But I'm happy for Benny. ... He comes up and gets a huge hit for us to win the game. He certainly got redemption."

After packing seven runs into the first two innings against Nick Martinez, the Rockies' offense went dormant. Colorado banged out seven hits, three for extra bases, in the first two frames but was unable to muster another hit until shortstop Troy Tulowitzki led off the ninth with a single to short center off Tanner Scheppers (3-1).

Right fielder Carlos Gonzalez followed with another single to short center. Third baseman Nolan Arenado flied to left, setting the stage for Paulsen, who drove a single into the gap in left-center. It was the first walk-off hit of his career and the Rockies' fourth of the season.

The win was the first for the Rockies (40-51) in three games after the All-Star break but their fifth straight win at Coors Field, where they improved their record to 22-24.

The Rangers (43-49) lost for the 10th time in 12 games, and have dropped three of four on their nine-game road trip to start the second half. They slipped six games below .500 for the first time since May 20.

Arenado doubled home two runs in the first, and Paulsen's single made it 3-0. The Rockies scored four runs in the second, highlighted by Tulowitzki's 12th homer, a two-run shot.

Catcher Tomas Telis and first baseman Prince Fielder singled home runs for Texas in the third against Chris Rusin, who pitched at least six innings for the fifth consecutive start. Rusin allowed five runs, three of them unearned due to his throwing error on a bunt play in the fifth.

Rangers second baseman Rougned Odor singled home the first run in the fifth with one out. Martinez went from first to third on the hit, and Odor took second on Gonzalez's throw to the plate, with Telis safe on a close play.

Paulsen said he thought Telis was out, proceeded to hold up two fingers to signal his teammates and never bothered to glance at the scoreboard. Paulsen then caught Fielder's grounder, which scored Martinez, stepped on the base for what Paulsen thought was the third out and continued toward the dugout. Odor, meanwhile, dashed home and scored on a head-first slide ahead of Paulsen's throw.

"Maybe next time I can throw three rocks in my pocket and take one out, each out," Paulsen said. "It's frustrating when you make bonehead plays like that. You just got to forget about it and keep going."

Paulsen said when he came up in the ninth against Scheppers, he wasn't thinking it was imperative to get a hit. Rather, Paulsen said he thought, "If I put a good swing on it, good things happen."

He connected on a 2-2 fastball.

"I've just got to execute better and make better pitches," said Scheppers, who retired the final batter in the eighth to strand three inherited runners before pitching the ninth. "It's a tough one to swallow, especially after the game came back so much. I've got to be able to go out there and throw a zero."

The Rangers tied the game in the ninth against John Axford (2-2), who blew just his second save in 18 opportunities. Pinch hitter Leonys Martin led off with a walk. With two outs and Martin on second, Axford went to 2-0 on the left-handed-hitting Fielder, and Weiss signaled for an intentional walk. Third baseman Adrian Beltre followed by lashing a double into the left field corner for his third consecutive hit.

"You get out to a 7-0 lead, you're hoping you can cruise to the finish line," Weiss said. "But maybe that gives us a little bit more mojo -- end up having to walk off and win a game in that fashion."

NOTES: SS Troy Tulowitzki reached base in a 41st consecutive game, tying the second-longest streak in Rockies history. ... Colorado likely will go with a four-man rotation until it needs a fifth starter July 28. ... Rockies RHP Chad Bettis, who went on the 15-day disabled list Sunday, does not appear to have any structural damage in his inflamed right elbow. ... Rangers RHP Anthony Ranaudo was optioned to Triple-A Round Rock to make room on the roster for RHP Nick Martinez, who was recalled from Round Rock for his start. ... Prince Fielder, the Rangers' designated hitter in 77 games, was in the lineup at first base for the 13th time this season. Manager Jeff Banister said no decision was made whether to play Fielder at first base in all three games of the series.
