Mets 4, Phillies 3 (11): Lucas Duda hit a two-run homer in the 11th inning as visiting New York beat Philadelphia in the third consecutive extra-inning contest between the two teams.
Duda hit a 1-0 pitch from Phillippe Aumont (0-1) over the fence in center, after Travis d’Arnaud drew a two-out walk for the Mets. Josh Edgin (1-0) earned the victory with a scoreless 10th, Eric Campbell finished with two hits and Jenrry Mejia pitched the 11th for his sixth save.
Carlos Ruiz collected two hits and Ryan Howard hit a two-run homer for Philadelphia, which has lost eight of its past 12. Philadelphia starter Cole Hamels pitched seven innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on six hits with four walks and eight strikeouts.
The Mets opened the scoring in the third when David Wright doubled to center, advanced to third on Campbell’s single and scored when Chris Young lofted a sacrifice fly that third baseman Reid Brignac caught in foul territory. The Phillies responded in the home half of the frame on Ruiz’s one-out double, setting up Howard’s 11th homer of the season to center on a 1-0 pitch.
Campbell doubled leading off the sixth and later scored on Curtis Granderson’s sacrifice fly to tie the score at 2-2. The two teams – who split consecutive 14-inning games the past two days – played into the 11th, when Duda connected on his eighth homer of the season and Marlon Byrd homered in the home half to bring the Phillies within 4-3.
GAME NOTEBOOK: New York starter Jon Niese held the Phillies to two runs on eight hits with six strikeouts in eight innings. … Both teams dipped into their minor-league affiliates for pitching help, New York promoting LHP Dana Eveland and Philadelphia summoning Aumont and LHP Cesar Jimenez. … New York OF Juan Lagares returned to the lineup one day after being scratched with ribcage spasms, but left with discomfort in his ribs in the 10th.
