Cardinals 10, Reds 0: Jake Westbrook pitched a five-hitter and four players homered as St. Louis rolled over visiting Cincinnati.

Westbrook (1-1) kept Cincinnati’s bats silent to maintain his season ERA at 0.00 while throwing his first shutout since 2006. The Cardinals won two of three in the series, improving to 23-3-2 in the last 28 series played against the Reds in St. Louis.

Cardinals second baseman Matt Carpenter matched his career high with four hits, including a home run, to boost his season average to .400 while Jon Jay, Carlos Beltran and Matt Adams also went deep. Joey Votto had two hits to lead the Reds.

Reds starter Homer Bailey (1-1) was just as solid as Westbrook through the first 4 2/3 innings before Jay hit a solo home run that barely cleared the glove of center fielder Shin-Soo Choo. Carpenter followed with a single to right, Matt Holliday doubled him home and scored on Beltran's two-run homer into the bullpen in right center for a 4-0 lead.

Adams, a first baseman who entered the game 7-for-11 with a home run in a part-time role, blasted a two-run homer in the sixth to extend the lead to 6-0. Adams added an RBI double in the seventh to boost his batting average to .643.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Reds LHP Sean Marshall was placed on the 15-day disabled list with tendinitis in his throwing shoulder. Marshall, who was 5-5 last season with nine saves and a 2.51 ERA, made his season debut Sunday by throwing a scoreless inning in a 6-3 victory against the Washington Nationals. … The Reds' offense began the day with 79 strikeouts, second-most in the majors behind the Houston Astros (92). They struck out three times against the Cardinals. … The four runs in the fifth inning snapped Bailey’s 23-inning scoreless streak during the regular season. He allowed seven runs and nine hits in five innings, striking out two and walking three.
